HOLY COW!!!! AVRIL WAS CANCELLED!!!!
omg... im sitting at my pc right now, smacking my head with my left hand while typing with my right... i was extremely shocked at the cancellation of the avril lavigne concert which was to be held on the 29th of August.. Normally, i would be in an unaffected position, but now, i'm all riled up and in great shock and wonder... the reasons that were given to cancel the tour were absolutely preposterous!! Avril is too sexy?? Its unpatriotic?? Its not right to influence the younger generation with pop culture?? sorry to say, but in my personal opinion, if Avril is sexy, the PCD a few months back was porn on stage.... just take a look:
i highly disagree that the concert will be unpatriotic, in fact, i dont think it interferes with our sense of pariotism at all... if this concert is not patriotic, then MTV, Channel V, E!, Hitz.fm, Hitz.tv and all other "non malaysian element" containing material should be turned off for the day.. i agree that showing off private parts on stage are not patriotic, but i do not see the problem in allowing a performer who is constantly in jeans, skirts and long sleeves to perform. i am not saying that it is alright to allow raunchy, erotic performances like the PCD had, im just saying that a reasonable set of standards are put up for performers like Avril. her garments are no different than any garment that can be found in DKNY, Chenelle and other such clothing brands.. in fact, they are far from sexy.. this is my point one...
another thing is that music is a language in itself, something which is in all beings, be it human or not... this is because the very essence of music is sounds that are created to convey messages to others, carving pathways to more sophisticated forms of communication. as a matter of fact, it is well known that all indigenous people all over the world have language that is basically hums, clicks, and other such sounds. just because the music sung is a little bit faster is not a good reason to loathe it..
my sense of patriotism does not run along the lines of running wildly into a maelstorm of bullets screaming my love for the country. no , am i not mocking the selfless sacrifice made by our forefathers and saviours, it is just that in peaceful times, the true patriotism of a person should be shown in more appropriate ways. how many people know the national anthem? how many people display the national flag for reasons other than " merdeka maa" or " nanti masalah wor.."? how many people appreciate the national language and fluently speak our tongue, not to mention write in the national language? it is not a question of blocking outside cultures from influencing the nations own culture, but it is about building up on our own culture by educating the innocent. it is about instilling the patriotic spirit within the people in ways like our forefathers have done. not only did they create a culture and community that is unique in its own right, they created a culture that was vastly diverse and rich in patriotic spirit, for the people were never shameful to stick out their chest and say it from the bottom of their heart,, " IM MALAYSIAN". i have to agree that the timing of the concert was rather awkward, but to say that the organisers publicized and sold tickets without approval, and on such a big scale? o me, it doesnt make sense.. i'm no kenny Sia, nor am i a mindless git. although the cancellation has yet to be confirmed, it is rather sad to me as a person to know that we are drawing an unprofessional image in the eyes of the world. months after the tour was announced, months after all the preparation was done, a week before the event, we cancel it on weak grounds.
actually, this whole situation could have been handled better by both sides. Avril could have held her asian leg of the tour at a later stage, her people could have been more sensitive to the sentiments of the malaysian public, especially in the midst of the merdeka celebrations and they could have been more sensitive to the culture of the public by having costume designs that suit the malaysian public and having the designs approved by the malaysian people. tedious as it may seem, it causes a lot of problems to melt away. my personal opinion, the concert should be continued, but with a strict set of guidelines and rules , appropriate for foreigners.. (u cant expect her to be in a 'tudung can you now?)... not only will it be fair to the thousands who are in a fix after they bought the tickets, butt to avril as well... but who am i to say? im just a random blogger....
